Print a book: how it works

Pick the product type above that comes closest to your project. In the configurator you set the format, the page count, the paper and the print run, and the price moves with you as you go. Then you upload your PDF, we check the file for bleed, resolution and embedded fonts, and it goes to press. There is no quote to wait for: you know the price and the delivery time up front.

What you decide yourself

Format, binding, paper and finish are chosen per project. For the format there are the standard sizes A5, A4 and square, as well as non-standard measurements. For the binding you choose between hardcover for books that need to last, softcover for a lighter and cheaper book, and saddle stitching for thin editions. Which paper suits depends on your content: lots of photographs call for coated paper, running text reads better on woodfree paper. The knowledge base on paper and materials sets out what each type is good for.

From one copy, with no minimum run

Because we print digitally there is no minimum print run. Printing one copy works just as well as three hundred. That makes it possible to order a proof copy first, hold it in your hands and only then have the rest printed. Reordering later is always possible, with the same settings and the same file.

Supplying your file properly

Most of what goes wrong with print goes wrong in the file. So supply a PDF with 3 mm bleed all round, embedded fonts and images of at least 300 dpi. For a hardcover or softcover with a spine you also need the right spine width, which depends on your paper and page count; work it out with the spine width calculator. All the specifications are under supplying files.

Publishing or selling your book

If you want to sell your book as well as print it, you will need an ISBN. In the UK these are issued by the Nielsen ISBN Store. What comes next around distribution, bookshops and direct sales is covered under publishing and selling.
