Which format suits an autobiography?
For autobiography printing, a text-led book reads most comfortably in A5 or 14 × 21 cm: handy to hold and familiar for a book you read from cover to cover. If your story includes photographs from the period you describe, keep that in mind when choosing your paper so both text and images come out well.
A hardcover with a sewn binding lies flat and lasts for generations, which suits a book meant to be handed down. For a version you share more widely, softcover is lighter and more economical to post.
Paper and finish
For a text-based book, cream novel paper or wood-free offset of 80 to 90 gsm reads most pleasantly: the light cream tone is gentler on the eyes than bright white. If your autobiography contains many photographs, choose 120 gsm silk for sharper images.
A hardcover can be finished with a dust jacket or with printing directly on the case, optionally with foil or blind embossing on the title for a refined, literary look.
Supplying your file
Supply your book as a print-ready PDF with embedded fonts, so your layout is preserved exactly. Scan old photographs at a minimum of 300 dpi at actual size, and keep a generous inner margin on a thick book. Start chapters on a right-hand page, as is conventional for this type of book. Not sure about your file? We are happy to check it with you at no charge.
Publishing or sharing your autobiography
Some people write an autobiography for their own circle; others want to reach a wider audience. Because we print from a single copy, you can start small and reorder later. If you want to sell your autobiography through bookshops or online stores, you will need an ISBN, which you apply for yourself at the International ISBN Agency and link to your edition.
Frequently asked questions about autobiography printing
Can I order a single copy?

What is the difference between an autobiography and memoirs?
An autobiography usually spans an entire life, while memoirs focus on a specific period, theme or set of experiences.
Can I include photographs?
Certainly. Scan them at a minimum of 300 dpi at actual size. For books with many images we recommend 120 gsm silk paper.
