Which paper prevents bleed-through?
This is the key choice for colouring book printing. If felt-tips are used, choose paper of at least 120 gsm, because lighter paper lets marker ink soak through to the back, ruining the colouring page beneath. For pencil or wax crayon, 100 gsm is enough.
Choose matt paper, not gloss. On glossy paper, pencil and felt-tip adhere poorly and colour stays patchy. Matt paper has just enough texture to hold colour well.
Single- or double-sided printing?
Consider single-sided printing for a colouring book meant for felt-tips. You lose pages, but no one has to worry about bleed-through. Many makers leave the back blank or use it for a small motif.
For double-sided printing, heavy paper of 140 gsm or more is advisable, especially if the colouring book is for children who press hard.
Supplying your file
Supply your file as a PDF, preferably in black and white for the colouring pages themselves. Make sure line weight is sufficient: lines that are too thin drop out or turn grey in print.
