Which binding suits a textbook?
A textbook is used intensively: highlighted, annotated and opened daily. A perfect or sewn binding is sturdy enough to last a full academic year. For a reader or workbook in which a lot is written, a wire-o binding is more comfortable because it lies completely flat.
A matt-laminated cover protects against wear in a bag and on a desk, so the book stays presentable through heavy use.
Paper and format
A4 is common for textbooks with diagrams, formulas and illustrations. B5 or 17 × 24 cm suits a more compact book that is lighter to carry. Choose 80 to 100 gsm for the inside pages: heavy enough to resist highlighter show-through, light enough to keep the book manageable.
If the book contains many colour charts or images, 100 gsm silk gives them more depth without making the text harder to read.
Supplying your file
Supply your file as a print-ready PDF with embedded fonts. Check that the chapter structure, pagination and table of contents are correct, because in a textbook, page references must line up precisely.
