Children’s book printing

kinderboek drukken

Children’s book printing at PrintItEasy starts from a single copy. Children’s book printing is all about durability as much as looks. A children’s book has to be lovely and tough at the same time. Sturdy materials, bright colours and a handy format matter more here than for any other book. You choose the size, the binding and the paper, and we check your file before production.

What is a children’s book suitable for?

For illustrators, authors and publishers of picture and read-aloud books.

Recommended options

  • Hardcover, tough enough for little hands
  • Thick, sturdy paper

Print a children’s book in 3 steps

  • Choose your specification. Decide on size, binding, paper and cover finish.
  • Supply your file. Upload a print-ready PDF in CMYK with 3 mm bleed.
  • We print and deliver. Once your file is approved, your children’s book arrives within 5 to 7 working days.

A sturdy build

For young children, a hardcover with thick paper is the best choice: it survives rough little hands, sticky fingers and plenty of pulling and bending. For the very youngest, extra-thick board (a board book) is ideal, though it needs a special build.

For older children who handle books more carefully, a softcover works just as well, as with an ordinary reading book.

Paper and colour

  • Choose sturdy paper of at least 150 gsm to resist tearing and show-through.
  • Go for gloss or silk, so the illustrations look vivid and saturated.
  • Make sure there is plenty of contrast, so images stay clear for young eyes.
  • A matt-laminated cover wipes clean easily.

Format

Square formats (21×21 or 28×28 cm) are popular for picture books: they give illustrations room and sit well on a lap during story time. A larger format suits books with full-page artwork, a smaller one a book children hold themselves.

A sewn binding that lies flat is lovely for reading aloud, especially when illustrations run across two pages.

Printing and publishing a children’s book

Because we print from a single copy, you can order a proof and see how your illustrations come out before ordering more. To sell your children’s book through bookshops, you will need an ISBN; see the International ISBN Agency. For guidance on colour, see the International Color Consortium. For tips on preparing colourful artwork, see our guide on the knowledge base.
