Which types of books are there?

Types of books differ less in how they are printed than in how they are used. A photo book lives on large images and wants coated paper, so colours keep their depth. A novel is running text and reads more comfortably on woodfree paper, because it does not reflect. A cookbook is used open on a worktop and benefits from a binding that lies flat. And a notebook needs paper that ink will not bleed through.

Those differences feed straight into your choices. Which binding suits which book is set out under finishing and binding, and the properties of each paper type under paper and materials. If you are unsure between formats, the comparison under hardcover or softcover helps. Planning to publish as well? You will need an ISBN, issued in the UK by the Nielsen ISBN Store.
