Create a book: cover and inner block
The cover is one half of the job; the inner block is the other. For the inner block you supply a separate PDF, at net format and with the same 3 mm bleed if photographs or blocks of colour run to the edge. If you want to know exactly which spine width goes with your combination, use the spine width calculator. The full specifications are under supplying files.
Why the gross format matters
A cover is always printed larger than the finished book and trimmed afterwards. That extra edge is the bleed, 3 mm all round here. If your background does not run into that edge, a white strip can remain after trimming. Keep important elements such as the title, your name and a logo at least 5 mm away from the trim line.
What you need
Work in a program that handles bleed and CMYK, such as InDesign, Affinity Publisher or Scribus. Export as a PDF with embedded fonts and images of at least 300 dpi; Adobe explains how in its guide to PDF export. If you are torn between bindings, compare hardcover and softcover first. Once your design is ready, pick the product type at print a book and order online.
