Matt lamination: what is the difference with gloss?
Matt lamination is a thin protective film applied to the printed cover of a book. It guards against fingerprints, scratches and moisture, and at the same time decides how the book looks and feels in the hand. Choosing between matt lamination and gloss is one of the most visible finishing decisions you will make.
Why laminate a cover at all?
An unprotected cover is vulnerable. Ink wears at the corners, the board frays where it is handled most, and daylight slowly fades the colours. Lamination lays a film over the printed sheet that makes the whole cover tougher and more durable, which is why virtually every quality softcover and most hardcovers carry one. The technique is described in general terms on Wikipedia.
What matt lamination does
Matt lamination scatters the light that falls on it rather than reflecting it. Highlights disappear, so the cover can be read comfortably under a shop light or a desk lamp, and the surface feels soft and slightly velvety under the fingers. The trade-off is in the colour: because the film diffuses light, deep blacks and saturated blues lift by roughly a tone and lose a little of their punch. On a novel, a biography or a poetry collection that restraint usually reads as quality.
One practical caveat. On large dark areas a matt film shows fingerprints and fingernail scuffs more readily than a gloss one, and those marks cannot be wiped away as easily. If your cover is mostly deep navy or black, it is worth asking for a proof before committing the whole print run.
What gloss lamination does
Gloss lamination reflects light instead of scattering it. Colours stay saturated, contrast increases and photographs keep their depth, which is why photo books, comics and commercial catalogues almost always use it. It also wipes clean with a cloth. The cost is glare: under a bright light the cover mirrors its surroundings, and fine type on a busy image becomes harder to read.
Which finish for which book?
As a rule of thumb: text-led books gain from matt, image-led books from gloss. A cookbook that will sit on a worktop benefits from the cleanability of gloss; a memoir that wants to feel personal benefits from the softness of matt.
