Paper that can be written and drawn on
An activity book is worked in, so choose paper of at least 100 to 120 gsm: sturdy enough to write, draw and colour on without ink showing through. If felt-tips are used, 120 gsm or more is advisable so marker ink does not bleed to the back.
Choose matt paper rather than gloss, so pencil and felt-tip adhere well and there is no reflection while a child works.
Binding and format
A binding that lies flat makes an activity book much easier to use: children want to write and draw without holding the book open. A wire-o or stapled binding lets the book lie flat. For a thicker activity book, a perfect binding is a tidy option.
A4 is popular: room for puzzles, mazes and drawing exercises. A5 works for a compact book children take along in the car or on a trip.
Supplying your file
Supply your file as a print-ready PDF with embedded fonts. Make sure line weight for drawing and puzzle exercises is sufficient, and keep a generous inner margin so exercises do not disappear into the gutter. Use plenty of contrast, so everything stays clear for young eyes. Not sure about your file? We are happy to check it at no charge.
For illustrators, schools and parents
Illustrators and makers print activity books to sell; schools and nurseries use them tailored to a theme or age group. Because we print from a single copy, you can order a proof and see how the exercises come out before ordering more. For guidance on preparing files, see our knowledge base.
