Which specification suits a family book?
A family book is often a keepsake meant to last, so a hardcover with a sewn binding is the natural choice: sturdy, dignified and able to survive years of handling. A sewn binding also lies flat, so photographs and family trees that run across two pages stay readable.
For extra copies to share among relatives, a softcover is lighter and more economical, and posts easily to family further afield.
Paper for text and photographs
A family book usually mixes text with photographs and documents. Choose 120 gsm silk if images dominate, so photographs stay sharp and colours come out well. For a more text-led family history, wood-free offset of 90 to 100 gsm reads comfortably.
Scan old photographs and documents at a minimum of 300 dpi at actual size, so treasured originals reproduce clearly. Older, faded prints benefit from careful scanning at high resolution.
Supplying your file
Supply your file as a print-ready PDF with embedded fonts, images at a minimum of 300 dpi and 3 mm bleed on full-page photographs. Keep a generous inner margin on a thick book, so nothing important disappears into the gutter. Not sure about your file? We are happy to check it with you at no charge.
A keepsake for the whole family
Because we print from a single copy, you can order one and reprint later for relatives who want their own. A family book makes a moving gift for a reunion, an anniversary or a special birthday. If you want to sell a wider family history, you can apply for an ISBN at the International ISBN Agency.
