Selling and distributing your book: the options

Your book is printed, now you want to get it to readers. There are more sales and distribution channels than you think. In this article we list the main options, from selling yourself to the bookshop.

Selling yourself

The simplest and most profitable way is direct sales: via your own website or webshop, at events, talks and fairs, or directly to your network. You keep the full margin and the contact with your reader.

Via bookshops and online stores

To reach a wider audience, selling via bookshops and online platforms is interesting. For this you need an ISBN and usually a distribution party that includes your title in bookshops’ central ordering systems.

Distribution and fulfilment

  • Self-managed: you ship yourself, maximum margin, more work.
  • Distributor: your title becomes widely available, for a commission.
  • Print-on-demand: print and ship per order, without stock.
