Think of a shiny gold or silver title. It instantly gives a luxurious, high-quality look.

Embossing (blind embossing and relief)

In embossing the paper is pressed into relief, so that a logo or title rises (or sinks) noticeably. Without ink this is called blind embossing. Subtle, elegant and very tangible.

Spot UV

Spot UV is a glossy varnish applied only to specific areas, for instance the title or an image element, often on a matt background. The contrast between matt and gloss creates a surprising, premium effect.

Which lamination do you choose underneath?

A luxury finish rarely comes alone: there is almost always a layer of lamination on the cover first. That choice determines how the finish looks. On matt lamination spot UV stands out most strongly, because the glossy area contrasts sharply with the dull background. On gloss lamination the same effect is barely noticeable.

Soft-touch lamination feels velvety and makes colours slightly duller, but it gives foil and embossing a chic, understated appearance. Do bear in mind that fingerprints show up more quickly on soft-touch and matt lamination than on gloss, certainly on a dark cover.

When do you use it?

Books you sell or give as a gift

Anniversary and luxury editions

Art books and photo books

Corporate publications that have to make an impression

Luxury finishes combine most beautifully on a matt laminated layer. Ask us about the options for your cover.

Supplying files for a luxury finish

A luxury finish requires an extra file alongside your normal cover. Foil, embossing and spot UV are applied separately, and the machine has to know where. Supply a separate layer or page containing only the shapes that receive the finish, in 100% black on a white background. Black means: foil goes here; nothing means: not here.

Work with vectors, not photos. A scanned logo with soft edges is something the machine cannot follow; a vector shape it can. Also keep the shapes from being too fine: hairlines and letters smaller than roughly 8 point either fill in or break up with foil. And do not let the finish run to the trim edge, because that is where placement is least accurate.

You can find more about paper and finishing standards in the graphic industry at ISO.

What does a luxury finish cost?

These techniques are handwork in the finishing department and involve set-up costs: a die or block has to be made, and the machine has to be set up. With a single copy that weighs heavily; with a run of five hundred it barely registers per book. A luxury finish is therefore mainly interesting if you are printing a serious run, or if the book is so special that the extra cost does not matter.

If you are considering it, always request a sample copy. Foil and embossing are techniques you have to feel to judge; on a screen you see nothing of them. If you are hesitating between two variants, that single sample copy is the cheapest decision you can make.

Frequently asked questions about luxury finishes

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
What is the difference between foil and spot UV?

Foil stamping applies a metallic or coloured layer; spot UV is a glossy, colourless varnish in specific places.
