Publishing a book yourself: where do you start?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Publishing a book independently means becoming your own publisher. That gives you complete freedom over design, price and print run, but it also means taking the steps a publisher would normally handle. The first is an ISBN: the unique number by which bookshops, libraries and online retailers recognise your edition. In the UK these are issued by the Nielsen ISBN Store<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After that come the practical decisions. Do you print a small run in advance, or work with print-on-demand where printing only happens once an order arrives? And do you sell directly, through bookshops, or through online retailers? Those routes differ sharply in margin and in how much work you do yourself; they are set out under selling and distributing your book<\/a>.
