For slightly older children a section-sewn softcover or hardcover is enough. A sewn book block prevents pages from coming loose.

Paper and colours

Paper weight: 150 gsm or higher for firmness and opacity.

Full colour: bright, saturated colours appeal to children.

Lamination: matt looks calm and reflects less, gloss stands up better to moisture and sticky fingers.

Rounded corners: optional, safer for the very youngest.

Format

Square formats (21×21 or 28×28 cm) are popular for picture books, because illustrations fit them well. Choose a format that matches the age group and the illustrations. We are happy to advise you on the strongest and safest specification for your children’s book.

Having a children’s book printed and published

Because we print from a single copy, you can assess a sample first — handy for seeing how your illustrations turn out on paper before you order a run. If you want to sell your children’s book through bookshops, you need an ISBN; see the International ISBN Agency. Ready to get started? Have a look at our page for having your children’s book printed.

Age determines almost everything

Who the book is for determines the specification more than your taste does. For toddlers up to about three, sturdiness and safety count: thick board, rounded corners, no sharp edges and as few loose parts as possible. For children of four to eight it can be an ordinary book, but with a hardcover that can take a knock and with full-page illustrations. From about nine, a children’s book already resembles an adult edition in structure, only with a larger type size and more white space.

Keep the typeface simple and large enough. For beginning readers a sans-serif type from 14 point works well, with generous line spacing and short lines. Do not place text over a busy illustration; put a calm area underneath it or keep part of the page free.

Supplying illustrations

Illustrations that run to the edge of the page need 3 mm of bleed; your drawing therefore has to be slightly larger than the final format. If you work with an illustrator, agree the format and colour mode in advance. Drawn or painted work should be scanned at a minimum of 300 dpi at actual size, and preferably higher for fine lines.

Bright colours from a drawing program sometimes come across more subdued in print than on your screen, because ink simply cannot be as vivid as light. When having a children’s book printed that is often exactly the difference between cheerful and washed out, so with a colourful book request a proof before you have the whole run printed.

Choosing paper for a children’s book

A children’s book is handled more roughly than most other books, and that should guide your choices. Go for a heavier inner paper of 150 g/m² or more, so pages do not tear easily and colours do not show through.

Coated paper keeps illustrations bright and wipes clean, which matters for a book that will be read at the kitchen table. For the cover, a laminated hardcover survives years of use where a softcover would soon curl at the corners. If you plan to publish and sell the book as well, you will need an ISBN, issued in the UK by the Nielsen ISBN Store. What each paper type does is set out under paper and materials.

Frequently asked questions about having a children’s book printed

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Which specification is sturdiest?

A hardcover with thick paper. For the very youngest, extra-thick board (a board book) is ideal, although that requires a special production.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Which paper for the illustrations?

Gloss or silk of at least 150 gsm, so that colours come across lively and nothing shows through.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Can I have one copy printed?

Yes. Handy for assessing a sample and seeing how your illustrations turn out on paper before you order a run.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Can I have a board baby book printed?

Real board books with thick pages require a separate production. We print hardcovers with a sturdy book block, which works well from about age three. For younger children it is best to discuss what is possible.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Which finish lasts longest?

A hardcover with gloss lamination. Gloss stands up to moisture and sticky fingers better than matt, and a sewn binding survives the book being opened a hundred times.

</details>

Request a free quote

View hardcover books

A children’s book has to be more than beautiful; it also has to take a beating.
